The Kinmel History

Until the 1920s the original house was called ‘Hendre Gyda’. The word ‘Hendre’ is usually associated with a very early site and goes back to a time when cattle were taken to the hills in the summer and brought down to the ‘Hendre’ for the winter. The Manor has undergone many changes through the years with the oldest part, on the right as one enters the front door, dating from around 1570s. It was extended in the 18th Century but these additions were completely absorbed when around 1840 it was bought by the Kinmel Estate and became the Agent’s house. The present front entrance was built at the end of a passage alongside the original house and a whole new wing was added to the left of it. The old building was altered to match the new work and this is the building one sees today. The Kinmel Estate prospered in the early 19th Century on the proceeds of the copper mines at Amlwch in Anglesey which for three-quarters of a Century produced two thirds of the World’s copper. Its owners, the Hughes family, lived in regal splendour at Kinmel. Hugh Robert Hughes it was said lived up to his initials (HRH) and in 1872 erected the present Kinmel Hall. In the 1920’s the then owner, Colonel H.B.L.Hughes, a bachelor and Colonel of Engineers who was also a competent amateur marine artist, sold the Hall and came to live at Hendre Gyda, changing its name to Kinmel Manor.

He had the house altered, opened up the entrance hall and inserted the oak fireplace which still exists and dates from around 1600. It is thought this was probably originally in his old school, Shrewsbury. He also had a splendid Dining Hall (now the Manor Restaurant) built as a focal point and brought with him the fireplace which previously stood in the entrance hall at Kinmel. Designed by William Edwards Nesfield it dates from 1872 and depicts the arms of the various Royal Tribes of Wales from which H.R.H claimed descent.

Kinmel Manor remained in the Hughes family until the 1960’s when it was again altered and turned into a Hotel. The Kinmel Manor has undergone numerous major refurbishments since the present owners took over the Hotel on 22nd June 1978, recently re-branding the hotel ‘The Kinmel’ and adding the luxury spa complex known as Kinspa.
